how to add two spaces after period in word

Before I give you a solution, note that double spacing after a period may get you lambasted. (Personally, since the time QuarkXpress was king, I've never seen a typeset document using them.)

  • Highlight a period and two spaces in your text
  • Select Tools > AutoCorrect in Word's main menu
  • Enable Replace text as you type
  • In the Replace box, type a convenient sequence; I suggest using two periods (..)*
  • Check the contents of the With box—you'll probably need to add two spaces after the period
  • Select Plain text for a format-matching replacement; selecting Formatted text will always apply the current font, size, etc.
  • Click on Add

To test, type period period.

Bear in mind that AutoCorrect sequences are language-dependent. If you type in another language, you'll have to redefine the sequence for that language.

* You could also replace "period" by "period space" or "period" by "period space space." Experiment and decide.

** It is now possible to make Word 2016 insert two spaces between sentences.

I'll add some information I just found out and posting in the forum of some screenshots. Note This is in 15.29 and was in 15.28.

  1. First, go to Word Menu.

  2. Then go to Microsoft menu and click on Preferences.

  3. Notice I have Chosen Grammar and More.
  4. Now click Settings this will open the Window as shown below:

  5. It shows here; I have two spaces between sentences selected.
To get that point, notice the item Space between Sentences If you click on the blue button beside.  You will see this:

I believe the APA 6 guideline matches this setting.

While in the various windows, I would suggest everyone and look around to make any other settings specified in any given specifications.  These settings are the best anyone can do until the various institutions can come up with Extensions to add the features needed.

I have a feeling this is the best Microsoft can do because of the Apple rules for Security (Sandboxing).
